Speaking

I am happy to prepare talks and deliver them to the public. My rates are very straightforward for this.

  1. All travel and accommodation costs need to be covered for me to get to and from the venue. This is charged at cost, quoted in advance, and requires either payment in advance so I can book – or booked for me by you if you prefer. Clearly travel and accommodation prices can change at an instant, so I offer no guarantees about prices quoted for this being held.
  2. For local events (ie within an hour’s drive for me) my charge is £75 per hour for time on site including delivery of the talk, and £75 per hour to research and prepare the talk itself if applicable. For charitable organisations, please contact me to discuss.
  3. For non-local events, my charge is based on a day rate of £450 (6 hours) , and charged in units of half a day or part thereof. These units include time spent travelling to and from the event, and time spent on site.

Examples –

  1. An hour long talk, 30 minutes travel away. This will be 0.5 + 1.0 + 0.5 hours – 2.0 hours = a half day ie £225.00.
  2. An hour talk in the evening, 2 hours away. This will be 2.0 + 1.0 + 2.0 = 5.0 hours = a full day ie £450.00, plus rail fare, taxi and overnight accommodation.

Research/Writing

I am happy to carry out historical research and to take on some writing projects. Again my rates are very straightforward, and are based on the same logic noted above.

  1. All travel and accommodation costs required for research will be quoted in advance and paid for in advance. This applies for trips to site, to the National Archive, National Library, local libraries and so on. On site research is charged at the day rate of £450 per day, charged in units of half a day, based upon a six hour working day.
  2. All remote (online) research is charged at £75 per hour. An estimate will be provided of what is to be required.
  3. All writing time, including production of plans and diagrams, collating evidence, writing and so on is charged at £75 per hour, and again an estimate will be provided.
  4. Any documents requiring copies being made from site can be ordered and paid for. Payment will need to be in advance, and there will usually be copyright restrictions that I will agree to on your behalf. These are legally binding agreements.
  5. It will often be the case that phase-based video/phone calls are required, feedback sessions on larger projects, and some potential redrafting time in some cases. This will also be charged at £75 per hour, and an estimate will be provided.

I like to keep things as informal and straightforward as I can to ensure the personal touch, but it is important for the commercials to be clear to avoid any confusion and manage expectations!

 

*Please note that since being diagnosed with Long Covid in the spring of 2021, I am not able to carry out any work projects, and cannot drive much more than an hour without an hour’s break to recover. I hope my health improves, and to be able to take on some work in the future.
