Renfrew Castle Castlehill is the newer of two lost castles in Renfrew, and survives only as a mutilated mound at the north end of the old High Street. It is visible from public footpaths but the site itself is fenced off and used as a childrens play area. There are no remains recognisable as a castle at all.
It dates to the early 13th century, and was probably a large enclosure castle on a platform surrounded by a wet moat. It was the seat of the Stewarts and their associated burgh, and was almost certainly destroyed in the late 13th century. It is unclear whether it was ever rebuilt, although constables of the castle were retained until the 15th century. The site was later used as a soapworks, and it is likely that any remaining traces of the castle were destroyed at this time.
