Redcastle is a large and much extended 17th century tower house within private grounds at the top of a steep riverbank overlooking the Redcastle Burn. Although it is sometimes considered to date from the 12th century, the ruins are nowhere near this old, and identification with the castle of “Edirdour” is problematic.

Instead Redcastle was a property held from the lords of Avoch – Douglases in the mid 15th century, and various members of the royal Stewart family. From 1570 Redcastle was held by the Mackenzie family from these lords, and it was the Mackenzies who erected the large tower house. In 1790 it was sold, and modernised in the 19th century. It was last occupied by the RAF in the 1940s, and was abandoned afterwards, with no firm plans to restore.
