Above Mains Castle East Kilbride is the site of an important 13th century courtyard castle built for the Comyn or Valognes family. Mains Castle itself is a freestanding rectangular tower house on a mound which formerly contained ancillary buildings that are now vanished. It was built for the Lindsay family of Dunrod in the 15th century.

The old Comyn castle was probably sacked during the Wars of Independence due to the opposition of the Comyn family to Robert Bruce’s monarchy, but it was not until the reign of Robert II that John Lindsay of Dunrod received his charter. Their descendants lived at Kilbride until the 17th century, when the tower fell into disrepair. It was reroofed in the 19th century but not restored until the 1970s. It remains a private property.
