Errol Castle may once have been a small motte now known as the Law Knowe, a small mound hidden in woods to the west of Errol Park. Known locally as the Gallows Hill, it was within a 19th century burial ground associated with Murie House. References to the Mote of Errol cease in the 16th century, and it was probably destroyed in the Wars of Independence.

In 1452 William Hay was created Earl of Erroll, and he probably founded the impressive tower house shown on Pont’s map of c1590. This was built on a new site, perhaps that now occupied by Errol Park House. In the 17th century the earl sold off the land to repay his debts, and from 1657 it was held by the earl of Northesk. Sometime between 1714 and 1741 it was sold again, possibly damaged, to a London banker who founded the new House of Erroll showing on Roys map of c 1750. The new house burned down in 1874, and the mansion which can be seen today was built afterwards. Errol Park, as it is now known, remains a private home, but is available to let as a venue. It is not believed that any remains of the older buildings survive inside.
