Rowallan Castle is an unusual building which dates in part back to the 13th century. It was erected as a hall house and courtyard on a knoll surrounded by marshland, and then extended and modified repeatedly. Today it is within the grounds of a golf course and the outside is accessible to the public within the limitations of the club.

The original hall house and courtyard was perhaps built for the Comyn family, but passed with marriage to their close allies the Mures. Undoubtedly damaged during the Wars of Independence, a tower was added in the late 15th century, and a domestic range added before 1547. At this point the facade was added to give it the appearance that it has today. Damaged in the mid 17th century, Rowallan was the centre of an 18th century legal case which saw the buildings ruined by the end. It was repaired in the early 20th century.
