Menstrie Castle was originally a small tower house built for the Alexander family in the late 16th century, and occupies slightly elevated ground within the village of the same name. It is managed by the National Trust for Scotland, who run the place as a museum – it is clearly visible from public roads.

The Alexander family, also known as the MacAlastairs were supporters of the Campbells whose lowland powerbase was nearby at Castle Campbell near Dollar. They were targeted by the Marquis of Montrose, a bitter opponent of the Campbell Marquis of Argyll, and Menstrie was torched in 1645. Four years later the damaged house was sold to the Holbourne family, who repaired it, and it was then occupied by a family of Abercrombies until 1740. It was abandoned soon afterwards, to be restored before sale to the Trust. Two apartments are available for let within the castle.
