Loudoun Castle is not open to the public, and lies in a private park which is actively monitored by security. All requests for access are denied. It has the appearance of an impressive baronial period mansion, but hidden inside are the remains of a 15th/16th century great tower, built by the Campbell family. Half a mile to the east are the remains of an earlier castle, a ditched motte.

This motte traditionally held a stone tower which was burned down in the late 15th century, and Loudoun is said to have been attacked several times in the 16th. However, the stories cannot be matched with facts, making them suspect. The castle was garrisoned by English troops in the 1640s and damaged, then repeatedly extended until in 1803 the baronial redesign took place. This building burned down in 1941 and it has never been restored, although the grounds were used as an amusement park between 1995 and 2010.
