Lochranza Castle is a small ruined tower house with parts dating back top the 13th century. It is built overlooking a narrow bay at the north end of the Isle of Arran, and may have been founded either by the MacSween family or the Stewarts after they were granted Arran in 1262.

After the Stewarts became kings of Scots Lochranza was maintained as a royal property and granted out at times to various members of the nobility who were in favour at the time. The castle was extended in the 16th century, and used as a garrison in the 17th. It was eventually abandoned in the 18th century, probably during teh Jacobite period or soon after, and today is maintained by Historic Environment Scotland.
