Barcaldine Castle is a small tower house built by the Campbell family in the early 17th century, and remained in use into the 19th century, although since the erection of Barcaldine House in 1709 it was not in constant occupation by the family, especially after the newer building was extended by the 1st baronet in the 1770s.

Barcaldine Castle was built to a style commonplace at the time – what is known as an L-plan tower house, with three cellars laid out in the shape of an “L” and a round tower in the angle containing entrance and stairs. The main hall was on the first floor, with a withdrawing room in the wing, and then bedrooms were upstairs, with servants quarters and small turrets at the attic level.

The castle was sold with the rest of the estate in 1842, by which time the castle was in poor repair, but the castle itself was repurchased by the Campbell family in 1896 and repaired over the next 15 years or so. Today it has passed into different hands, and is available to let as a venue.
